Set up a SIP softphone on Android

Use the credentials for the actual service the phone will represent: a Hosted PBX extension and a trunk registration are different accounts.

Get the current SIP settings

  1. For a PBX user, open Hosted PBX extensions, select the correct PBX and extension, and open its provisioning or SIP-credentials action. For a trunk account, open SIP Registration.
  2. Use the current QR/provisioning action when the chosen app supports it. Otherwise copy the username, password, domain/server, transport and port shown for that account.
  3. Add a SIP account in your supported softphone and enter those values. A display name is a label; it is not a replacement for the authentication username.
  4. Match the codec and DTMF settings to the service. Enter a proxy or STUN server only when the account configuration calls for one.
  5. Save and verify registration. Keep the password and QR code private; regenerate exposed credentials and update the intended devices.

Route inbound calls and verify

For a Hosted PBX extension, connect the public number to that PBX and choose the extension or its call flow as the destination. See phone-number routing. For trunk SIP registration, select the appropriate SIP-account destination in Number inventory.

Test outbound caller ID, inbound ringing, both directions of audio, keypad tones, voicemail and internal dialing where applicable. Test on Wi-Fi and mobile data, then repeat the incoming call after the app and screen have been idle.

On Android, battery/background restrictions can stop an otherwise registered app from receiving calls while idle. Use the app vendor’s guidance for your phone model and permit microphone and notifications as needed.
