Connect a public telephone number to your phone system, then decide what callers hear and who answers.
Connect the number
- Open Number inventory and edit the number you want to route.
- In Voice Routing, choose Hosted PBX as the Call Action and select the intended PBX destination. Review and save.
- Open Hosted PBX phone numbers for that same PBX. Locate the number and edit its destinations.
- Put the destinations in calling order: for example, a business-hours condition, then a queue during opening hours or an announcement and voicemail when closed.
Choose voice and fax behavior
- Set busy, no-answer and timeout destinations as well as the main route. An unconditional forwarding setting overrides the normal destination list.
- Maximum channels controls simultaneous inbound calls; it is separate from the number plan’s included channels and minutes.
- Caller-name lookup and external forwarding can incur usage charges. Check the applicable rates before enabling them.
- Configure recording, delivery and retention for the conversation. If recordings are emailed, the recipient receives a separate copy.
- Fax settings are separate: select the supported detection mode, protocol, header and storage or email destination. Automatic fax detection can delay a voice call.
- Marking a number as an emergency caller ID does not activate emergency service. Complete emergency registration first.
Save and verify
Review the selected PBX and proposed values, then save. Place a controlled call through the affected route and check Call history. Include busy, unanswered and after-hours cases where they apply. Keep the previous configuration until the new route is verified.
