PHONE SETUP GUIDE

Provisioning Cisco phones

Follow the configuration steps below for your device. Menu names and available options depend on the phone model and firmware.

Some illustrations are unavailable. If you need help with a configuration step, contact our support team.

This tutorial will explain how to provision a Cisco 7940/7960 with our Hosted PBX service.

Please make sure that you first reset your phone to default settings, as explained in this tutorial:

For the purposes of this tutorial, we'll use a Cisco 7960 phone.

Step-by-step guide

First things first: Add your phone mac address on your PBX dashboard.

Make sure you define your phone's mac address in the provisioning dashboard, as shown in the below image:

  • Reset phone to default settings
  1. Power off the phone
  2. Hold the # key pressed and then power on the phone (keep the # key pressed)
  3. When the Headset, Mute and Speaker buttons begin to flash in sequence, release the # button.

Screen should also say "Reset key sequence detected"

  4. At this point, you’ll notice the Headset, Mute and Speaker buttons flash in sequence, indicating that the ip phone is waiting for you to enter the reset sequence.
  5. Press 123456789*0# to begin the reset. If you accidentally press a key within the sequence twice e.g 1123456789*0#,
the ip phone will still accept the code and begin the reset. If an invalid key is pressed, the phone will continue its normal startup procedure.
  6. Once the correct key sequence is entered, the phone will display the following prompt: Save network cfg? 1 = yes 2 = no

  7. To maintain the current network configuration settings for the phone when the phone resets, press 1. To reset the network configuration settings when the phone resets, press 2.
If you press another key or do not respond to this prompt within 60 seconds, the phone continues with its normal startup process and does not reset.
Otherwise, the phone goes through the factory reset process.

Reset phone to default settings

  1. Once phone has booted, it will read "Unprovisioned" on the screen. Please press the Settings button:

  2. Scroll to "Unlock Config" (option 9) . A password will be asked. Default password is "cisco" (Please note that our provisioning system will change this password to "multitel" once your phone is provisioned)

    (Hit the "Accept" button)

  3. Go to "Network Configuration", click "Select" (or choose option 3 from keyboard) :

  4. Scroll down to "Alternate TFTP" option, make sure it is set to "Yes"

(Hit the "Save" button once done. You will be taken back to the "Settings" menu, so scroll again to "Network Configuration" - or choose option 3)

  5. While in the "Network Setup" screen, set up the "TFTP Server" (option 7). Here's an example below:

(hit the "Accept key" and then "Save". Your phone will start re-configuring and might reboot. Please allow up to 5-6 minutes - or more, depending on your network connection - while your phone is downloading the new config files)

List of PBX server IP addresses

Please note that in the above example we used TFTP server address "209.124.34.242". Depending on the PBX server location you use, this IP address might be different.
Please see below the list of IP addresses you should use for each location:

    6. Make sure you have added your MAC address in the PBX Provisioning web panel (https://hosted.multitel.net/pbx/provisioning.php)

The phone will not provision if the MAC address is not listed correctly or if phone is not provisioned at all.

    7. Once the phone is done rebooting, the lines will show the extensions you have defined in the PBX provisioning web panel:

Warning!

Do not set up/change/alter any other values while in the "Settings" or "Network Configuration" screens as these might result in your phone not being able to provision automatically.
